Josh Allen makes huge plays in huge moments. His pitch back from Amari Cooper caused “M-V-P” chants that were so loud, it made Niagara Falls stop in its tracks. His propensity to play Hero Ball has been shown time and time again — and often it pays off. However, in a pivotal moment on Sunday, it was Allen’s. decision to play it safe that proved crucial to a Buffalo victory.

Former NFL player and current host of Hollywood Squares (two professions that require a deep understanding of Xs and Os) Nate Burleson was hugely complimentary of Allen’s performance. In particular, Burleson loved his decision to play it safe on the Bills’ final drive in their win over Baltimore.

“I know it’s a small play. It will not go down in the stat line, but for me, that is a representation of Josh Allen‘s growth. You know early on in his career we all said it here to say, ‘No no no no no no, don’t pitch that ball back!’ But years ago, he would, because he was such a playmaker and he wanted to make the big play in every big moment.

But this year, you’ve seen the discernment and taking care of the ball. I just feel like he’s repeating the phrase in his head: It’s the plays that you don’t make that could win you the game. We know he’s dominant and when he wants to put the cape on, he could become Superman in any moment. He really played a flawless game even if the numbers and the statistics don’t jump out at you. So congratulations to Josh, congrats to the Bills, [the win is] well deserved, and congratulations to Bills Mafia… they are one fan group that I would love to see win a freaking Super Bowl because they deserve it. Hopefully they get rid of that black cloud from the 90s.”

Burleson’s praise perfectly demonstrated exactly how Bills fans feel about Allen. The star quarterback has provided plenty of moments that make Buffalo want to take off their jerseys in frigid weather and set them on fire. However, Allen showed his veteran growth and didn’t let desperate times (such as the Bills’ quest for a Super Bowl) call for desperate measures. Buffalo was in full control of the game, but Baltimore was breathing right down their necks, and it could have been much worse had Allen made a Murphy’s Law decision.

Instead, the Bills are one step away from their first Super Bowl in 31 years.
