While it’s not a move that might rate for Vegas Golden Knights fans, the Henderson Silver Knights got a boost on Thursday when they announced their signing Lucas Johansen for the rest of the AHL season.

In case you were wondering, yes, Johansen is the brother of current free agent and 900-game NHL veteran Ryan Johansen. Lucas’ NHL resume is about 100 times thinner, having played just nine NHL games, with six of them happening last season with the Washington Capitals.

The younger Johansen has been a mainstay of the Hershey Bears, Washington’s AHL affiliate. Drafted 28th overall in 2016, Lucas joined the Bears in the 2017-18 season and posted six goals and 27 points in his first season. His development stalled out since then, but he’s become a solid AHL veteran, with 20 goals and 92 points in 258 career games.

That resume also includes winning the Calder Cup twice in Hershey, who are the reigning back-to-back champs of the AHL. Johansen posted two goals and 11 points in 29 games during those runs.

Johansen is part of Henderson’s push to upgrade their backend with young-ish AHL veterans. Two weeks ago, the Silver Knights signed Calen Addison, a 24-year-old veteran of 72 NHL and 77 AHL games. Henderson will seek to improve on the 2-7 record that currently has them last-place in the AHL’s Pacific Division.
