As you know, the Chicago Blackhawks are heading to Wrigley Field for the 2025 Winter Classic on December 31. Coming with it is some extra TV love, as “The Road to the Winter Classic” is making its return. Get ready for your close-up, Connor Bedard.

The NHL’s almost-annual docu-series has tended to bounce around from outlet to outlet, but it’ll be returning to its HBO roots for 2024, airing on TNT (starting December 4 in the U.S.; December 5 on Sportsnet for Canadian fans). Fans not watching live will be able to stream the series on Max. The five-episode series will conclude on New Year’s Eve during the lead-up to the game.

While “The Road to the Winter Classic’s” roots date back to 2010, this is part of a trend of the rise of the sports docu-series. While HBO, in particular, has always been active in the space with its iterations of “Hard Knocks,” we’ve seen Netflix get into the action to much acclaim with 2023’s “Quarterback” and 2024’s “Receiver.” Even “Hard Knocks” has expanded, covering four teams in the same NFL Division this fall.

Since no one cares about the St. Louis Blues, one hopes that we’ll get to see screen time devoted to showing Bedard behind-the-scenes and get glimpses into his personality and how he interacts with teammates. It’s the NHL, so there’s always the opportunity for them to go bland, but this is a great opportunity to truly introduce the hockey world to the reigning Calder Trophy Winner.
