Has it ever felt worse for a 12-2 team than it does for the Detroit Lions right now? The playoffs are clinched, but they dropped way more than a game against a contender in the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. David Montgomery is out for the season. The Lions put out a laundry list of IR designations in Carlton Davis, Khalil Dorsey, and Alim McNeill on Tuesday. All but Davis are definitely out for the year.

All told, that’s 42 starts and 55 games that are out of the lineup for a Lions team that has Super Bowl aspirations. Meanwhile, they need to keep winning to keep ahead of the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles, who now match Detroit’s 12-2 record (the Lions currently hold the tiebreaker against both teams). It’s the worst possible time for these injuries to hit.

But Jared Goff is stepping up, and the captain is sending a message to not just the rest of the team, but the fanbase. “Don’t be depressed.”

And it sounds nutty to say that, but if any team is going to take these in stride, it’s going to be one that has Goff and Dan Campbell in lockstep and refusing to feel sorry for themselves. Campbell went on 97.1 The Ticket to hype up fans in a trying time.

“We’re going to bounce back, we’re going to respond,” declared the coach. “We will play the game any way needed to win. We still got a good offense. We’ve got plenty of defensive players. I could go rattle them off right now. We’re going to put the best 11 out on the field. We’re going to freakin’ cut it loose.”
