For those hoping Mark Stone would make a speedy comeback and resume going on the 21-point-in-13-game tear he was on before his lower-body injury, it hasn’t quite turned out that way. So far, he’s missed five games, and is on track to miss a sixth after the Vegas Golden Knights put their captain on injured reserve yesterday.

Now, before other fans get hopping mad over this — injured reserve doesn’t affect the salary cap at all, so save your tears. It simply frees up a roster spot for Vegas to have flexibility. A player on IR has to be out for a minimum of seven days after the initial injury, which means Stone has already fulfilled that requirement and will be able to come back at any time.

The only question is: how long will that be? We’re already talking about a player who’s missed 112 games over his last three full seasons, and including this year, that number is about to be at 118 and counting. The good news is that not having him on LTIR means Vegas is optimistic about having him back sooner rather than later, but it’s still nerve-wracking for such an important player to be sidelined.

The Knights also made an injury move with Ben Hutton, putting him on LTIR. Vegas will get some small savings on his $975K salary, which will no doubt be considered a grossly unfair advantage by the crybabies of the hockey world when the Knights lift the Cup again this June.
