The Numbers Behind Miami’s Eventual Dominance Of Carolina

With the Carolina Panthers bringing an 0-5 record to sunny Miami and a matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles on the horizon, the Dolphins had to be prepared for the potential trap game on Sunday. Through one quarter it looked as though they were anything but as Miami fell asleep on both sides of the ball and went down 14-0.

After what seemed to be some ‘cute’ play-calling to begin the game, Mike McDaniel righted the ship and the team quickly returned to form to blow out the Panthers.

Let’s look at some interesting numbers from Miami’s eventual dominance over Carolina.

9 – This is the 9th time in team history that the Dolphins have started the season 5-1.

11Raheem Mostert has taken over the NFL lead with 11 combined touchdowns.

28 – Mostert is currently on pace for 28 touchdowns. The record for touchdowns by a Miami Dolphin is 18 by Mark Clayton during the 1984 season.

2Christian Wilkins contributed 2 of the team’s 4 sacks during Sunday’s contest. His 3.5 sacks this season is one off of his career high set back in the 2021 season, and he still has 11 games left to play.

35 – After Carolina jumped out to a 14-0 lead Miami proceeded to score 35 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

51 – One of the main criticisms of Coach McDaniel has been his willingness to go away from the run when facing a challenging situation.  Despite falling into a 14-point hole, McDaniel evenly distributed the play-calling against the Panthers as Miami ran the ball 51% of the time.

89 – Playing offense for what seemed to only be 3 quarters, the Dolphins accumulated 424 yards of offense.  Their average coming into this game was 513 yards, which was 89 yards more than they accomplished versus the Panthers.

814 – Fighting through cramps, Tyreek Hill finished the game with 163 yards bringing his 6 game total to 814. The previous NFL record was 812 yards through 6 games, set back in 1961.

54 – The Miami Dolphins welcomed back many former players to honor newly inducted Hall of Famer Zach Thomas at a half-time ceremony.

The Kevin Harlan Factor – Since Coach McDaniel has taken over the Dolphins, they are 6-0 and average just over 40 points per game when Kevin Harlan is the play by play man.  Any chance for a permanent hire?
