The Numbers Behind Miami Keeping Their Playoff Hopes Alive In Week 17
The Miami Dolphins pulled off a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, defeating the Cleveland Browns by a final score of 20-3. They got the victory via a solid performance from Tyler Huntley, who filled in for an injured Tua Tagovailoa. Miami needs a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars next week, in addition to a Denver Broncos loss to the Carson Wentz-led Kansas City Chiefs to qualify for the postseason.
But that’s for Week 18. Let’s focus on the here and now. What are the numbers that defined the Week 17 win?
52 – Tyler Huntley was the game’s leader on the ground, totaling 52 rushing yards against Cleveland’s defense. His 13-yard rushing touchdown was also the first rushing touchdown that the Browns have allowed to a quarterback all season.
50.8 – The Dolphins’ defense held Dorian Thompson-Robinson to a 50.8 passer rating tonight. It was, somehow, the highest QBR that DTR has had in any game this season.
2 – Against the Dolphins’ defense, the Browns had two more punts (5) than points scored (3). All five Browns punts came on three-and-out drives.
7 – The Dolphins’ punting unit was no less busy; Jake Bailey set a season-high in punts in a game on Sunday, with seven.
18 – DTR was force-feeding the football to Jerry Jeudy all day, as the Alabama product had a whopping 18 targets on the afternoon. It’s tied for the third-most targets any receiver has had in a game this season.
61 – Tyreek Hill was the Dolphins’ leading receiver with nine receptions for 105 yards. He now needs 61 receiving yards in Week 18 to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth consecutive season.
1,098 – Prior to Sunday’s game, the Dolphins had not allowed three or fewer points in a game in 1,098 calendar days — credit to Anthony Weaver for getting his defense to accomplish that. Miami’s last three-point defensive effort came in Week 16 of the 2021 season against the New Orleans Saints, which they also won 20-3.
11 – The Dolphins accumulated eleven penalties, which tied a season-high for the Dolphins .
Minus-11 – Malik Washington had one rush that went for an eleven-yard loss. His minus-11 rushing yard total is the second-lowest that any player has had in an NFL game in 2024, narrowly avoiding Kalif Raymond‘s season low of minus-12, which occurred back in November.
1 – Of the Browns’ three trips into the red zone, they only managed to register points on one of those trips, via Dustin Hopkins‘ 25-yard field goal.
4 – The Dolphins’ 20 total points was four more points than the Browns have scored in their last three games combined (16).
5 – Neither the Dolphins nor the Browns had a successful fourth-down conversion despite five attempts between the two teams.
