The Miami Dolphins enter week 11 after a much needed bye and hope to continue to get their impact players back from injuries. Perched atop the AFC East at 6-3, getting healthier for the 2nd half of the season, and with their defense starting to round into what we’ve all expected, the Dolphins need to come blasting out of the gates, proving to the rest of the NFL that they are a team to be feared.

Let’s review some of the numbers that tell the story of the 2023 season thus far

31.7 –  Miami is averaging 31.7 points per game which is ranked #1 in the NFL. They are the only team this season to average over 30 points.

39 – But a closer look Those they are succeeding against teams with losing records to the tune of 39 points per game

17 – And struggling their way to only 17 points per game against teams with winning records. This has been the story of 2023 and it will have to change in the second half of the year if the Dolphins want to achieve their goals.

119.5 – Wide receiver Tyreek Hill deserves to be in MVP conversations. He is averaging 119.5 yards per game and currently is on pace for 2,031 yards which would break the NFL record held by Calvin Johnson

435.3 –  The Dolphins are the only team in the NFL who averages more than 400 yards of offense per game, coming in at 435.3 ypg. They are ranked #1 in the NFL. They average close to 150 yards less per game while playing away from home(516 vs 370.8).

287.4 – Tua Tagovailoa is passing for 287.4 yards per game which has him ranked at the top of the league. His average against top tier teams (Buffalo, Philly and KC) is 230.3 ypg whereas vs lesser teams his average yards per game is 319.6.

0 – The Miami Dolphins have 0 wins against teams above 500. They are also the 2nd team in the NFL (Detroit Lions) who have not lost a game to a sub-500 team.

20 – With 20 receiving touchdowns, Miami is currently tied with Minnesota for 1st in the NFL.

17 – Miami and Baltimore are currently tied for 1st in the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns.

147.9 – The rushing attack is currently averaging 147.9 yards per game which is the 2nd highest. This will be a focal point as the season winds down as the weather dictates game planning.

5.9 – Lead by the impressive tandem of Raheem Mostert and De’von Achane, Miami is #1 in the NFL averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

11.9 – They average 11.9 rushing attempts less when playing against teams with winning records. Against teams with losing records=29.2 attempts per game and vs teams with winning records=17.3. Maintaining balance and using the rush is paramount in Miami’s attempts to be successful.

12.1 – Rookie phenom De’von Achane is averaging an impossible to maintain 12.1 yards per carry. The impact of his return from injury is the shot in the arm that this offense needs to get back on track.

15 – Butch Barry’s offensive line unit has allowed the 4th lowest number of sacks with 15.

11.7 – The defense allows 11.7 points less per game at home versus on the road. At home they allow 18.5 ppg and while away they give up 30.2.

-4 – The Dolphins currently have a -4 takeaway ratio. Winning football is difficult to maintain while in the negative here.

After a disappointing second half of the season last year the Dolphins have a lot to prove after the bye. The coaching staff needs to address the mental breakdowns, pre-snap penalties, and negative plays that continue to haunt this very talented team. If they can somehow overcome these and strengthen their mentally, this team has the talent and coaching staff to make some noise when the games truly count in January/February.
