Dan Orlovsky Perfectly Breaks Down What Makes Buccaneers Offense So Dangerous
There’s a lot to be happy about right now if you’re a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker Mayfield is riding high, the defense is overcoming incredible health obstacles, and the team got an early season signature win last week over the Lions.
Perhaps the most exhilarating part of the early season success has been the emerging offensive scheme. After suffering through, what many believed to be, a Dave Canales offense that didn’t properly take care of its weapons, Liam Cohen has been a revolution.
On NFL live on ESPN, Dan Orlovsky laid out why the Buccaneers are already so dangerous on the offensive side of the ball.
“You can’t Blitz them. I know this. You can’t blitz this offense right now, Chris and Mike look like the guys they won the Super Bowl with. I said this since week one… usually when you’re going to blitz it’s one on one and then Mike is going to get the ball. You’re going to try to play some sort of middlefield open pressure, it’s going to be Chris working the hashes and Baker finding him. You know we talk about so much on this show just seeing it the right way, those guys are all seeing it at the same level… Baker’s just understanding of defense right now has grown so much. I think his offensive coordinator Liam Cohen has done a fantastic job. So what they’ll do so often is they will put Mike by himself. If you’re going to play Mike one on one, good luck. And if you’re not well then Chris is going to get work or McMillan is going to get work. I also think the motion and the under center and the play action is huge.”
When you get rid of all the narratives, hype, and fantasy football talk, offensive football is a simple game. Can you scheme your weapons open consistently? Tampa has always felt like they have had the weapons in the receiver room. With the addition of Bucky Irving, their skill players are arguably as talented as anyone in the league. If Baker can continue to play within himself Orlovsky is exactly right: Opposing teams will have no choice but to sit back and play this offense straight up, because if you come to get them, they are too good and you will pay.
