Buccaneers Sign Troy Hill From Practice Squad
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are struggling against the pass, with their ranking 30th in yards allowed per game being mostly due to their 30th-ranked pass defense. So it’s no surprise that they’d use their bye week to shore up their secondary. The Bucs should get a boost by having Jamel Dean potentially returning to the lineup next Sunday, but they added another option to the roster on Tuesday.
Veteran cornerback Troy Hill was cut by the Carolina Panthers on October 18, but didn’t have to wait long to find another gig. The Bucs inked him to the practice squad on October 30, and now Hill is being signed to the active roster.

Hill’s a 10-year veteran who’s bounced around the league a bit since leaving the LA Rams in 2020, going from the Cleveland Browns to the Rams (again) before starting the last two seasons with the Panthers. Unfortunately, quarterbacks have had success when targeting Hill this season, as he’s allowed 15 catches on 17 targets for 135 yards and a touchdown. His 119.2 QB rating against isn’t much to look at.
But in spite of all those catches, Hill hasn’t been burned for many long throws, which is likely why his PFF pass-coverage grade clocks in at 70.6, which is only bested on the Bucs by Zyon McCollum (78.8) and Dean (73.6). Hill might not be an ideal every-down player, but with Tampa’s secondary in the state it’s in, every bit helps.
