The Cleveland Browns are currently navigating a complex situation with Amari Cooper. As he enters the final year of the five-year deal he signed with the Dallas Cowboys, Cooper is holding out for a new deal. To be honest, he should be. A growing take amongst sports fans is that athletes should be paid for what they’ve done instead of the potential of what they might do. Who has done more for Cleveland’s offense than Cooper?

Cooper is 30 years old and the primary obstacle in the negotiations appears to be the length of the extension. While Cooper seeks a multi-year deal for stability and recognition, the Browns have offered only a one-year extension. This cautious approach from the team likely stems from concerns about committing to a longer contract for a player in his 30s.

Well, the question now becomes, What do you want? Do we pay players based on what they’ve already done, or what we think they might do? “Prove-it” deals for athletes whose numbers stack up with some of the best in the game showcases the hypocritical paradox amongst professional sports organizations. In Cooper’s case, his impressive stats from last season and his ability to adapt to different quarterbacks make a strong argument for rewarding his past performance.

Given the recent surge in wide receiver contracts, Cooper’s stance is justified. Though he may not command the highest salaries in the league, his consistent performance and value to the team warrants more than his current $20 million annual pay. According to Spotrac, Cooper’s market value stands at $88.289 million over four years, or about $22 million annually. This aligns with his expectations and the broader market trends.

General manager Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski have both expressed optimism about reaching a resolution. Berry has lauded Cooper as a high-level, Pro Bowl-caliber player and a significant part of the team’s culture. Stefanski, while acknowledging ongoing dialogue, has kept details of the negotiations under wraps.

The Browns face a critical juncture. Ensuring Cooper’s presence and satisfaction is vital for maintaining offensive stability and maximizing Deshaun Watson‘s potential. Trading Cooper or losing him to a holdout would significantly disrupt the team’s offensive plans. A two-year extension seems like a reasonable compromise, offering Cooper the security he seeks while allowing the Browns to benefit from his talents.

This contract standoff transcends financial negotiations; it’s about recognizing and securing Cooper’s role and value within the NFL. His strategic holdout and public comments are calculated moves to solidify his future, and the Browns must respond accordingly to retain one of their key playmakers.

As the season approaches, the resolution of this standoff will be pivotal. Both Cooper and the Browns have a shared interest in finding common ground. Cooper’s proven track record and the team’s offensive ambitions make it essential for both parties to reach an agreement. The outcome of these negotiations will significantly impact the Browns’ prospects in the upcoming season and beyond.

The Browns’ management needs to consider this perspective. Cooper has already proven his value and reliability, making him deserving of a contract that reflects his contributions. It’s not just about the potential he holds for future seasons; it’s about recognizing and rewarding the tangible impact he’s had on the team. This approach not only secures a top-performing player but also sends a positive message to the rest of the team about the organization’s commitment to valuing proven talent.

As the clock ticks down to training camp, the resolution of Cooper’s contract situation will be a defining moment for the Browns. Balancing the fine line between financial prudence and recognizing player value is vital. The decision Cleveland makes will echo through the team’s dynamics and influence their performance in the season ahead. Both Cooper and the Browns stand to gain from a fair and timely resolution, setting the stage for a potentially successful campaign.
