The ultimate goal in football is to win the Super Bowl. That goes double for a quarterback. Often, their legacy depends on whether they can win, and when they get one, their legacy becomes about how many times they can lift the Lombardi Trophy. It’s a safe bet that Josh Allen‘s place in history will be determined by how many championships he can deliver to the Buffalo Bills, but that doesn’t mean his current resume is irrelevant.

Even though he hasn’t won the ultimate prize yet (and he’s only 28), there are huge positives to take away from Allen’s play in the playoffs through this point in his career. In fact, if he keeps up his current pace, he could end up going down as one of the best postseason quarterbacks of all time.

Allen’s playoff record might just be 6-5, but the stats prove he shoulders very little blame for Buffalo’s five losses.

Among quarterbacks who have had five or more starts in the playoffs, Allen is:

  • First in yards per game with (272.3)
  • First in touchdowns per game (2.1)
  • First in touchdowns to interception ratio (23:4)
  • Tied for first in games with a 135.0-plus passer rating (three)
  • Most rushing yards ever by a quarterback (609)
  • Sixth in interception% (1.0%; first among QBs with 10-plus starts)

Even in the games where the Bills have lost, Allen has still had strong games. Back in 2021 against the Kansas City Chiefs, he threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns. Last season against the Chiefs, the stats weren’t quite as elite through the air, but he did rush for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

Allen’s 23 touchdowns are the fifth-most of any quarterback through 11 postseason games. The names ahead of him are all legends: Patrick Mahomes, Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, and Dan Marino. Not bad company, with three members of that club winning a title.

The individual stats are impressive, but the team stat is the concerning part. The Allen-led Bills are only 1-3 in the Divisional Round. History says it’s a pretty good bet that Allen will continue to post insane numbers, but everyone knows it’s going to take a total team effort to knock off the Baltimore Ravens. It can’t be just Allen who steps up. But regardless of whether the Bills advance or get bounced on Sunday, let’s not overlook the greatness that Allen has put on display in the playoffs.
