Nick Wright Makes Bold Josh Allen Proclamation
It’s amazing what a big-time win can do. Off the heels of a 30-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills and their star quarterback Josh Allen are currently getting all the flowers.
As talk of Super Bowls and MVPs dominates the NFL media world, there was a specific compliment that caught our ear. On “First Things First” on Fox Sports, die-hard Chiefs loyalist Nick Wright placed Allen’s legs atop the mountaintop when it comes to scrambling quarterbacks.
“Josh Allen is the most effective running quarterback EVER,” Wright said. “Josh Allen scrambles are more effective and more debilitating in crucial moments than any quarterback running play ever! And he won the game with it, he picked up multiple critical third downs with it. My fear can’t lie, and I am so much more worried of when Josh Allen takes off and runs than any other quarterback I play.
I’m kind of separating in my head designed quarterback runs and scrambles,” The Fox host clarified. “[On] designed quarterback runs, Cam [Newton], [Michael] Vick, Lamar [Jackson] are all better than him… if the design of the play is for the quarterback to take off and run. But if it’s a passing play that the quarterback flips to a run? Mahomes does it as effectively as anyone I’ve ever seen, but it’s very sparing. For Josh, it’s a huge part of the game plan. I don’t know what box the Bills don’t check as far as [a] top-tier contender, they check every box to me.”

It’s an incredible compliment, given some of the elite scramblers this league has seen. Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, and Randall Cunningham all tortured defenses by regularly turning pass plays into devastating ground gains. Yet, it’s hard to disagree with Wright placing Allen on top of the list. Yes, Lamar and Vick ruined people with their legs, but Allen has time and again sucked the soul out of opponents with late-down and late-game scrambles. Just when it feels like a defense has them right where you want them, Allen breaks their spirit in a way that’s difficult to recover from. People might ultimately categorize Wright’s comments as preposterous, but we believe he’s right on the money.
