Colin Cowherd Is Putting Buffalo’s Playoff Pressure On The Right Shoulders
Often times, in losing situation, football fans and analysts will point fingers at the quarterback. Even if a QB plays great, a common question asked is “Why didn’t he do more?”.
It has happened on numerous occasions with Josh Allen, who has been on the losing end of games in which he’s played exceptionally well. Despite his performances, most of the national questions have echoed the “when will Josh Allen break through” sentiment.
However, Colin Cowherd, on his podcast, The Colin Cowherd Podcast, rightfully stated that Sean McDermott, who has come under fire for how he’s handled crucial situations, is the top member of the Buffalo organization under immense pressure to succeed in this postseason.
“I think these are the Sean McDermott playoffs. So Josh Allen… in 10 playoff games, has a passer rating of 100, 21 touchdowns, and four picks. This is not a Lamar Jackson situation. He has been a B+ to A- quarterback in the playoffs, and again, I don’t expect you to be as good as you are in the regular season, because you’re not playing Carolina and you’re not playing sh*tty teams, so if you’re a 100 passer rating quarterback in the playoffs, that’s exceptional, and Lamar has gotten tight… That’s not Josh. Josh has been excellent. If they get bounced early in the playoffs, and I know this sounds crazy, and I like Sean McDermott, but… if Cincinnati got in and played Buffalo in the first round and Cincinnati won… I think McDermott’s in trouble. Because when I watch this team, I don’t want to hear about Josh Allen. This is not a Josh Allen referendum. He lost a game because he scored a touchdown with 13 seconds left to Mahomes. He’s been fine in the playoffs. This team, this coaching staff has real pressure on them.”
He’s on the money. Josh Allen will always do Josh Allen things, and has given Bills fans no reason to believe otherwise. McDermott, on the other hand, has made astoundingly questionable decisions in crunch time that have cost Buffalo crucial victories this season. Even though Allen is playing as well as any quarterback in the universe, he can only play so much hero ball, especially when his kryptonite can be his own coaching staff.
Coaches don’t often get fired when they make the playoffs, especially in seasons where they are the number two seed in the playoffs. Allen is arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, but Buffalo has been vulnerable to losses in games that they have no business losing, and a lot of those losses have been at the hands of the coaching staff. If Buffalo gets knocked out of the playoffs early, especially with an MVP quarterback at the helm, the pressure on the coaching staff will likely come to a breaking point so Josh Allen’s superhuman level of play doesn’t result in another Jim Kelly-esque tenure.
