The Bengals’ franchise quarterback, who was signed to a $275 million dollar contract extension prior to the 2023 season, due to a torn ligament he suffered in last night’s loss to Baltimore, and will likely need surgery. It’s a devastating blow to a franchise who was hoping to get itself back into the playoff race.
For the foreseeable future, the Bengals will roll with Jake Browning, who came in relief for Burrow after he was in clear pain while trying to practice his throwing motion on the sideline. In just over a half of play, Browning was 8/14 for 68 yards. He also threw his first career touchdown late in the fourth quarter to Ja’Marr Chase.
Despite the tough injury, Zac Taylor expressed confidence in the Washington product.
Jake Browning now takes over as the Bengals’ starting QB. “This season is far from over,” said Bengals’ HC Zac Taylor. https://t.co/VXLaIREGVt

It’s been an injury plagued year for the 2020 number one overall pick, as he was plagued early on by a calf injury he suffered in training camp. The nagging injury was a huge part of the Bengals’ tough 1-3 start. After the calf injury was put behind him and the Bengals won four straight, they dropped two in a row to the Texans and Ravens, bringing them to an overall record of 5-5.
Now, in a highly competitive AFC and with the Bengals’ forced to ride with a backup QB for the rest of the season, Cincinnati’s playoff hopes are insanely slim at best.
Joe Burrow ends the 2023 season with 2,309 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, six interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 91.0. He is fully expected to be ready to return in time for the 2024 season.
