Joe Burrow is clearly one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and he consistently demonstrates that he can make all of the throws a quarterback needs to make. After throwing ability, the next step in the development of a quarterback is situational awareness; that is, knowing what type of throw to make in a given situation.

Dan Orlovsky took to his Twitter page to to pour over game film and demonstrate what separates Burrow from nearly every quarterback in the NFL in this regard.

“Joe Burrow, this past weekend, put on a type of throw clinic, the type of throw that is needed.” Orlovsky said. “I have said for years, I don’t care if you can make all the throws, make the right throw at the right time. What type of throw is needed? We saw so many different back shoulders and then a couple over the top. So this is really one of the things that he does as good, if not better, than anybody.”

Orlovsky, a longtime NFL quarterback who has developed into a well-respected NFL analyst, broke down Joe Burrow’s throws that he made against a remarkably talented Denver secondary.

The breakdown can be seen below.

In a league where dual-threat quarterbacks have become the norm, Joe Burrow remains arguably the best tried and true pocket passer in the NFL. His situational awareness and understanding of the type of throws he needs to make are a large part of him being the NFL’s all time leader in completion percentage (68.4%), which is exceptionally impressive considering he played a large part of his career behind a questionable offensive line.

Burrow continues to be a dark horse MVP candidate and will be for years to come. His ability to make all the throws combined with his ability to know what throw to make and when is what separates him from the rest of the pack in terms of ability to produce from the pocket.
